How to Increase Download Speed in IDM? thumbnail
IDM can help you speed up your downloads from the Internet significantly.

Internet Download Manager, better known as IDM, is a program that manages video, website and file downloads so they can be completed quickly. Boasting a number of useful features, IDM even allows users to pause or stop their downloads and start them again from the same place at a later time. Unfortunately, IDM may sometimes seem to run slower than it should as a result of improper configuration or out-of-date files. Luckily, increasing download speed with IDM is generally quite easy to accomplish.

Instructions

    • 1

Update your version of IDM to the latest version using the built-in update feature. Restart the program to allow the updates to take effect.

    • 2

Open the "Options" menu, then select "Connections."

    • 3

Locate the "Connection Type" drop-down menu. Take note of the current setting, then change it to a similar setting with a higher overall bandwidth.

    • 4

Locate the "Default Max Conn. Number" parameter and take note of the number in the box beside it. Change this to a higher number, which will allow IDM to create more connections with the same server when downloading files in parts.

    • 5

Click "OK" to accept the changes in settings. Close IDM and restart it to make sure that the changes are in effect.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you continue to have speed issues, check your firewall settings and make sure that an exception has been made to allow IDM to connect with the Internet. If your firewall is blocking some or all of IDM's functionality, it will cause problems with your download speed or prevent you from downloading files altogether.

  • Only download files from trusted sources that are legally allowed to distribute the files that you download. Files from untrusted sources may contain viruses or other malware which can contribute to slow download speeds as well as general computer slowdown and other problems.
