How to Install a Key Logger
A key logger is a a program that allows users to record all keyboard strokes made on the computer. They are used for legitimate purposes, such as monitoring an employee's productivity or assisting law enforcement. It can also be used to monitor your children's Internet activities. Most key logger programs are hidden and difficult to detect. A key logger can either be a software installed in the computer or a hardware device directly connected to the computer keyboard.

1
Download a key logger program from the Internet and install it to a local drive in your computer. Examples of key logger programs are "Actualy Key Logger" and "Refog Key Logger" (See Resource List), but there are several others available on the Internet. Many key loggger software are free, although some are only available for free trial. When the free trial expires, you will be asked to pay for a fee to continue using the program.

2
Run the key logger installer and follow the installation instructions on your screen. Make sure not to put a shortcut on your desktop to make it as discreet as possible. If there is an option to "hide" all traces of the key logger software, activate it.

3
Provide a password to reveal the hidden computer logs. This is what you will use every time you want to access them. Make sure that you provide a strong password to avoid unauthorized access.
-
4
Provide an email address if the key logger allows you to send all computer logs to an email address. Every time the computer is connected to an Internet connection, it will automatically send a copy of the logs to the email address provided.
-
5
Double check if all shortcuts and other traces of the key logger program are not visible in your "Start Menu" or "System Tray." Click on "Start," and then see if there is a shortcut of the program. Also check the "System Tray" found at the lowermost right corner of the window. Delete the shortcuts, if there are any.

6
Purchase and install a key logger hardware if you are not comfortable installing key logger software to your computer. This hardware is a short cable attached to the keyboard cable. It usually does not require software installation and automatically saves all computer logs (See Resource List). Refer to the user manual for specific instructions on how to install and use the hardware.

Tips & Warnings
When used for illegal purposes, key loggers can be a threat to personal security. Some key logger programs are also installed as trojans that hijack the computer system, that is why you have to be careful when choosing a key logger software to install.
