How to Backwash a Nautilus Pool Filter

How to Backwash a Nautilus Pool Filter thumbnail
Keeping your pool and filter clean.

By backwashing a Nautilus pool filter, you can clean the pool pump sand to remove dirt particles that have been trapped by the sand when the pool water filters through the sand and pump during normal operation and from vacuuming the pool. The Nautilus pool filter should be backwashed when the filter pressure rises to 7 pounds per square inch (PSI) or more above the initial clean reading on the pressure gauge, which is 10 PSI or under. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the sand filter pump. Roll out the backwash hose that is attached to the outlet at the bottom of the pump. The idea is to have a long enough hose so that the water drains far enough away from the pool and away from grassy areas.

    • 2

Turn the multi-port valve on the filter to the "Backwash" position. If you are using a two-position slide valve, lift the handle of the valve so that it is extended upward before moving it.

    • 3

Turn on the pump and allow the water to circulate until the water in the sight glass on the side of the pump runs clear. Note: If the pump does not have a sight glass, run the backwash for one minute.

    • 4

Turn off the pump. Move the multi-port valve to the "Rinse" position, or on a slide valve, turn the valve to the "Rinse" position. Turn on the pump and run for one minute.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 2 through 4 three times. Remember to turn off the pump before moving the valve each time.

    • 6

Release the air pressure in the pump after the last cycle by loosening the bleeder screw on the opposite side of the pressure gauge. Once the air pressure is released, tighten the screw. Turn the valve to "Filter." Turn on the pump.
