You can mount rope on bitts or other deck hardware

Mounting a rope on a boat deck is another way of saying that you're storing the rope on the deck. To store the rope on deck, you'll need a deck fixture, such as a pair of Samson posts or a cleat, of sufficient size to wrap the length of the rope, with "wings" on either side, like the wings on the cleat used to tie the rope on a flagpole, under which you may wrap and secure the rope.

Instructions

    • 1

Drop the eye--a loop spliced into the end of the rope--next to bitts, cleat, pair of Samson posts or other fixture on the deck.

    • 2

Wrap the rope around the bitts, cleat or pair of Samson posts in a counterclockwise direction until you are holding the eye on the other end of the rope in your hand.

    • 3

Pick up the eye you laid on the deck and drop the eye over the deck fixture.

    • 4

Wrap the eye you are holding in your hand around the bitts, cleat or Samson post in a figure-eight fashion, under the wing of the deck fixture, over the top of the deck fixture, under the opposite wing of the deck fixture and over the top of the deck fixture.
