      Remove the power cord from the weed eater. Apply pressure and turn the black cartridge that holds the trimmer string clockwise. Remove the spool cartridge.

      Remove grass and other dirt that may have accumulated inside the trimmer. Pull out any additional dirt that may be attached to the center spool tower of the trimmer.

      Apply pressure on the center spool tower and push down on it. Line up the two holes that are located on the exterior of the trimmer with the two knobs on the outside of the string spool where the string will exit.

      Unwind 5 inches of string from the new spool. Insert one end of the string through the first hole in the base of the weed eater and the other end of the string through the second hole in the base of the weed eater. Pull the string through the hole from the outside to extend it.

      Line up the new spool onto the center spool tower. Apply pressure to the spool, pushing it down and turning it counterclockwise until it clicks.

      Plug the power cord back into the weed eater and start it. A piece of the string will break off as it is automatically cut to length.
