How to Repair a Snap in a Canvas Awning
The snaps on your canvas awning may attach the awning itself to the framework, or the snaps may attach awning accessories such as screen panels and shades. Over time, a snap may fail to function and need repair. Replacing the old snap is the easiest repair, as once a snap has been dented or disfigured it can no longer be used. Although snaps attached to canvas seem permanent, they are removable with the right tools. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need

- Pliers
- Power drill with 1/8-inch drill bit
- Snap set
- Snap setting tool
- Hammer

1
Remove the canvas awning from the framework. Lay the awning on a sturdy surface.
-
2
Place a block of wood underneath the snap to protect the work surface. Grip the sides of the snap with the pliers.

-
3
Place the drill bit on the small raised section in the center of the snap. If you do not see the raised section, turn the snap over and work from that side. All snaps have a raised center section on one side of the snap.
-
4
Switch on the drill and push the bit gently through the raised center section. As soon as the drill exits the backside of the snap, stop the drill. You have removed the section that holds the two snap parts together.
-
5
Pull the snap off the fabric, one side at a time. The snap should release easily. If the snap resists removal, run the drill through the center of the snap again.
-
6
Insert a replacement snap, pressing the center prong through the hole left by the previous snap. Lay the other half of the snap replacement on the opposite side of the fabric. Make sure that the snap is facing the same direction as the original snap (snaps to the inside or snaps to the outside).
-
7
Place the snap setting tool over the prong and hit it with a hammer to set the snap. Test the snap by trying to twist it with your fingers. If the snap twists, it is not set enough. Use the snap setting tool and the hammer again, until the snap is secure.

Tips & Warnings
Set a snap in a scrap piece of fabric and try to snap it to the mating side of the snap you are replacing. Most snaps are universal, but check to make sure you are using the right size snap before installing it on your canvas awning.
A new snap may resist snapping to the existing mating side. Apply a lubricant, such as silicone, to the existing side to ease the connection.
