How to Properly Sight With a Bow

How to Properly Sight With a Bow thumbnail
Spend time at the range to properly sight with a bow.

A bow sight is an essential accessory for accurate shooting. Regardless of the type of sight, the process used to sight a bow remains the same. Each sight can consist of several pins that are designated for targets at different distances. To properly sight a bow, adjustments will be made to each pin for windage and elevation. Sighting in a new bow takes concentration and preparation, but following a systematic approach can reduce the amount of time spent on the range.

Instructions

    • 1

Securely attach the sight to the bow using the allen wrench with the included screws. Make sure the screws are tight to prevent moving while sighting in. Evenly space the pins inside the sight pin housing. Adjust the position of the housing to the middle of the sight picture when at full draw.

    • 2

Set a target at 5 to 10 yards. Use the top pin of the sight to shoot three to five arrows at a specific target. Note the general direction and point of impact (POI) of the arrows.

    • 3

Adjust the pins using the allen wrench in the direction of the POI. Focus first on the elevation, the direction of the arrow up or down from the intended target. Move the pin in the direction of the POI. For example, if the arrow is hitting above the POI, move the sight pin up. By moving the pin up, it causes you to lower the bow while shooting, which will move the POI closer to the intended target. Shoot another group of arrows, and continue to make small adjustments until the arrow hits the target consistently.

    • 4

Move to 20 yards and shoot a group of three to five arrows. Adjust the elevation by moving the pin in the appropriate direction. Evaluate the windage adjustment, the impact of the arrow left or right of the target. Move the pin in the direction of the POI. For example, if the arrows are hitting to the left of the target, move the pins to the left.

    • 5

Continue the process until every pin is set to the desired distance.
