How to Check Transmission Fluid on a Ford

Drive the Ford vehicle for several minutes before you check the transmission fluid level. Checking the fluid at operating temperature is ideal for ensuring the right measurement. Place the vehicle in "park" on a level area.

Open the hood of the Ford and locate the automatic transmission fluid dipstick. The dipstick is labeled "ATF" and is colored red. The ATF dipstick is found on the driver side of the Ford.

Remove the dipstick and wipe it with a clean rag. Replace the dipstick, making sure it is completely in the container to ensure an accurate reading. Remove the dipstick one more time and read the ATF measurement on the dipstick. The fluid is colored bright red or green, depending on the model of your Ford, and is easily noticeable on the dipstick. You will notice two lines: "full" and "add." The fluid will read somewhere between those lines. If it's below the "add" line, add fluid immediately.

Use a funnel to pour the appropriate amount of fluid into the dipstick tube. Check the level again; repeat this process until the fluid reads an acceptable measurement.
