How to Bead a Net Necklace

A beaded net necklace is moderately simple jewelry design that looks complicated. You can bead the hanger portion of a net necklace by using any beading technique, then add the netting portion of the design along the length of the hanger. Most net necklaces are made with seed beads, but you can use larger beads for the net or sprinkled throughout the netting as an accent. Stitching the beads together to form the hanger and the net is simply a matter of following and repeating a pattern.

Instructions

    • 1

Thread the beading needle with 30 inches of waxed beading thread. Pull the thread 16 inches through the needle. This is the tail and will gradually become the working thread. When the working thread becomes too short, add another length of thread with a double-overhand knot.

    • 2

Thread 15 color A 11/0 seed beads to within 2-inches of the working thread. The "A" color beads are the dominant color of the net necklace design. Hold the tail and pass the needle back through all of the beads to make a circle, exiting through the first seed bead that you added. The working thread and the 2-inch tail should be side by side between the same beads. Tie a double-overhand knot.

    • 3

Pass the needle back through half of the seed beads in the circle. The circle is part of the clasp on the necklace hanger.

    • 4

Thread an even number of color A seed beads to create the desired length of the necklace hanger. The hanger of a net necklace should fit like a choker.

    • 5

Begin the second row by adding one alternate color seed bead, color "B." Skip the last A bead in the first row of the hanger and pass the needle through the second A bead on the hanger. Pull the thread taut. The B bead should rest on top of and in between the last two A beads on the first row. Continue to create the second row by skipping an A bead, adding a B bead and passing the needle through the next A bead. End the second row by passing the needle through the last A bead on the first row.

    • 6

Make the third row of the hanger by adding an A bead and then passing the needle back through the first B bead on the second row. Continue to add one A bead at a time, and then pass the needle through the next B bead.

    • 7

End the third row by exiting the last B bead on the second row. Pass the needle through the loop on the clip section of the lobster claw clasp. Wrap the thread around the loop several times to secure the clasp to the hanger. End by passing the needle back through the first A bead on the first row of the hanger.

    • 8

      Add 1 B bead, 3 A beads, 1 B bead, 3 A beads, 1 B bead, 3 A beads, 1 B bead, 3 A beads, 1 B bead and 3 A beads. This is the first vertical row of the net.

    • 9

Pass the needle back through the last B bead that you added. Pull the thread taut to form the tip of the net. You are now beading your way back up to the hanger.

    • 10

Add 3 A beads, 1 B bead and 3 A beads. Pass the needle through the third B bead in the first vertical row.

    • 11

Add 3 A beads, 1 B bead and 3 A beads. Pass the needle through the first B bead added in the first vertical row. Pass the needle through three of the A beads on the first row of the hanger.

    • 12

Make the third vertical row by adding 1 B bead and 3 A beads. Pass the needle through the last B bead added in the second vertical row.

    • 13

Add 3 A beads, 1 B bead and 3 A beads. Pass the needle through the first B bead added in the second vertical row. Repeat the pattern, passing the needle back up through the B bead in this segment to make the tip of the second net. Pull the thread taut.

    • 14

Add 3 A beads, 1 B bead and 3 A beads. Pass the needle through the second B bead added in the third row. Repeat the beading pattern. Pass the needle through the first B bead added to the third vertical row. You should now see the net pattern emerge. Pass the needle through the next three A beads on the first row of the hanger. Repeat until the netting fills the length of the hanger.
