Instructions

    • 1

Remove the picture from the frame. Often the mold is on the picture and not the frame itself. In order to clean the picture it is necessary to remove it from the frame. If there is mold on the frame as well perform the following steps on the frame as well as on the picture.

    • 2

Spray the picture with a thin layer of the mold or mildew disinfectant spray. Spray the front and back of the picture even if mold is only visible on one side. Mold spores can be invisible, and its best to be overly cautious when trying to clean and get rid of them. Only apply a thin layer of disinfectant spray, as over-application could cause damage to the picture.

    • 3

Put the picture out in the sun and let it dry for around 1/2 an hour to an hour. Once the picture has dried the mold should have died. If no sun is available find the driest, most well-ventilated spot you can. Any environment that is damp or humid will allow the mold to continue to live.

    • 4

Brush the dried out mold off the picture using a soft brush or rag, preferably outside or in a well-ventilated area.

    • 5

Put the picture back in the frame once all the mold has been wiped away. Keep a close eye on the picture and frame to make sure the mold doesn't make a surprise reappearance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your framed pictures in a well-ventilated, low humidity room to avoid mold growth. In the hotter months it can help to use a dehumidifier to help control the temperature and moisture of the room.

  • Wear a protective mask when brushing the mold from the picture. Mold is toxic and can get into your lungs and cause damage.
