How to Find a Quarter Corresponding to a Date in Excel

A quarter stands for a one fourth of a value. Because a calendar year consists of 12 months, a year quarter includes three months. Microsoft Excel is a popular spreadsheet program. This program allows you to set relationships between cells in the spreadsheet based on built-in formulas. Using this feature you instantly determine a quarter for any date entered into a spreadsheet cell.

      Right-click on the cell "A1" in the Excel worksheet.

      Choose the option "Format Cells" in the context menu, and then select the tab "Number."

      Choose the category "Date" and select the desired date format, for example, "14-Mar-2001" in the field "Type." Then click "OK."

      Type "ROUNDUP(MONTH(A1)/3,0)" and press "Enter." The quarter corresponding to the date in the cell "A1" will display in the cell "C2." In our example, you will see "2" - the second quarter for the date 14-Jun-2009.
