How to Keep Spam From Coming to Your Email Address
In 2003, the CAN-SPAM Act was enacted by Congress to address concerns with unsolicited email. The Act establishes several guidelines punishable by fines up to $16,000 per email sent. Many businesses still spam user inboxes by utilizing software that identifies simple email addresses at specified domains. Whether email marketers deliberately or unknowingly spam, receiving spam can be costly, time consuming and annoying. Steps to prevent the receipt of spam are available including clever methods for managing your email addresses and spam-blocking and filtering software.

1
Obtain at least two email addresses. Reserve an address for family, friends and other personal purposes. You should protect your primary email address. When surfing the Internet, use a less personal address to signup for newsletters, when filling out online forms and purchasing items. Make sure your personal email address is complicated which makes it less likely to be identified by spammers.

2
Signup with protected email providers. Many email service providers offer email with built-in spam blockers. Services like Gmail and Hotmail automatically block emails from senders you do not know. Keep these settings and be wary of unfamiliar email communication.

3
Turn on the text reading feature in your email program. Only read HTML-based email from senders you trust. Opening HTML-based email with links and pictures may cause you to inadvertently download spy ware, adware and viruses.

Install anti-spam software. You can purchase and install spam blocking or filtering software. Spam blockers identify and delete spam. Spam filters quarantine probable spam for you to view later and take the desired action. In a server environment, installing an anti-spam software greatly reduces the amount of spam you receive. The software is easy to configure and highly customizable. SpamFighter and ChoiceMail are good anti-spam software choices.
