How to Convert a Twin Bed Into a Bunk Bed
The best way to convert a twin bed into a bunk bed is to build a loft bed that can accommodate the original twin bed underneath. This preserves the integrity of the original bed frame and allows you to make adjustments to the bed arrangement later on. Plans for a standard-size twin bed can be adjusted to accommodate larger beds by changing the dimensions of the lumber. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions
-
Measure and Cut
-
1
Measure the dimensions of the twin bed's frame.
-
2
Cut two of your 2-by-4-inch beams to match the length of the twin bed frame.
-
-
3
Cut the other two 2-by-4-inch beams to match the width of the twin bed frame.
-
4
Cut your plywood sheet to match the length and width of your twin bed.
-
5
Drill two holes in the end of each post, using a drill bit the same diameter as your bolts. Place the holes on center, one 12 inches from the end of the post, the second 12 3/4 inches from the end.
-
6
Drill two holes in each end of each of your longer beams, vertically stacked 3/4 inches apart and 3 inches from the end of the beam. Use the same drill bit you did to drill holes in the posts.
-
7
Remove the mattress from your existing bed frame.
Build the Loft
-
8
Lay your beams in a rectangle with the shorter beams inside the longer beams, all beams resting on their narrow sides.
-
9
Connect the beams, using two screws at each joint.
-
10
Lay your plywood on the frame and screw it in place with a screw at each corner.
-
11
Set up the support posts so the drilled ends are upward.
-
12
Install the bed frame by running bolts through the holes in the posts and the corresponding holes in the beams. Tighten the nuts in place.
Add Existing Frame
-
13
Slide the twin bed frame in beneath the loft frame.
-
14
Attach the twin frame to your support posts using wood screws. Screw through the twin frame material and into the support posts.
-
15
Place your original mattress on the twin bed frame. Add the second mattress to the top bunk.
