There can be few things more frightening on the road than an encounter with an abusive or irate driver. The term "road rage," which has become common vernacular, refers to any act of aggression by a driver directed toward other motorists. Road rage can range from agitation, to physical assault to even murder. According the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, an average of 1,500 men, women and children are seriously injured or killed each year in the United States as a result of dangerous drivers. If you have an encounter with a motorist who is driving dangerously in California, the best way to deal with it is to report the driver.

Dial 911 from a cell phone to be routed to the California Highway Patrol while traveling on California's highways or freeway system. Dial 911 on a local street to be routed to the local police department. Provide the license plate number, the year, make and model of the car to the dispatcher. Provide your location and time of incident, and describe the incident and the driver's behavior.

Report the license plate number and state.
