How to Begin Loom Beading

How to Begin Loom Beading thumbnail
Beads can be woven on a loom.

Bead looms are a method of weaving small beads to create a variety of pieces such as necklaces, bracelets and belts. Unlike hand weaving, loom weaving helps crafters space the beads easily and provides them with a steady base on which to work. The process relies on the warp threads strung across the loom. Crafters can create various designs by using beads of different colors and sizes.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Thread the loom. Tie the end of the thread to the tension knot at one end of the loom and wrap it around twice. Pass the thread through a slot in the spring, across the loom and through a corresponding slot on the spring at the opposite end. Pass the thread around the tension knot at this end twice and then up to the next opening in the spring. Take the thread back to the opposite side, through a corresponding slot on the spring and around the tension knot twice. Repeat this process until there is an appropriate number of warp threads on the loom. This will depend on how wide the bracelet, necklace or belt is. For instance, a bracelet with five beads across will need six warp threads.

    • 2

Cut a piece of thread 20 inches and thread the needle. Tie the end of the thread to the first warp thread on the loom, on the left or right side, and close to the spring. Hold the needle under the warp threads.

    • 3

Pick up five beads on the needle and push them down to the end of the thread. Push each bead up so that it fits between two warp threads. Support the beads with one finger so they stay elevated.

    • 4

Take the needle above the warp threads and re-insert it into the beads. Pull the needle and thread out through the five beads and take them under the loom again. Repeat this step until the piece is as long as required.

    • 5

Finish the last row. Tie a knot on the last warp thread, as close to the last bead as possible, and apply a spot of glue or clear nail polish. When this is dry, weave the needle and thread through several beads to hide the thread and make the work secure. Cut the thread as close to the beads as possible.

    • 6

Cut the warp threads on either end of the piece as far away from the beads as possible. Weave each thread into the beads as in Step 5. Cut the threads.
