How to Feed a Blue Tail Lizard

Blue tail lizards prefer to eat live insects.

Caring for a blue tail lizard is relatively easy, but you need to take some precautions when feeding them. Lizards prefer to eat live insects that fly and hop, but you need to avoid giving them spiders, caterpillars, wasps and bees, as they could become poisoned. In order to ensure that your lizard gets all the nutrients it needs, you should first dust the insects with calcium powder.

Things You'll Need

• Insects (meal worms, crickets, wax worms)
• Tweezers
• Plastic bag
• Calcium powder
• Tablespoon

Instructions

1. Pour one tablespoon of calcium powder into a clean, plastic bag. Calcium powder is usually made from oyster shells and can be found in your local pet store.

2. Drop between 10 and 15 insects into the plastic bag filled with calcium powder and blow air into the bag before closing it. Shake the bag gently, coating the insects inside with the powder.

3. Use tweezers to gently grasp each insect out of the bag. Take care not to crush or kill the insects, as lizards prefer live prey. Drop the insects into your blue tail lizard's habitat.

4. Monitor the insect supply in the habitat, and replenish it as needed.
