How to Use a Two-Dog Coupler

A two-dog coupler is an extremely useful product for walking two dogs at one time without having leashes and dogs wrapping around your legs. Two dogs do not always look at the same objects or people and may circle back around you or try to run in two directions at once. This can wreak havoc on the handler and causes many accidents by falling every year. There are various sizes and materials to choose from in a two-dog coupler but the standard length of a coupler lead is 12 inches long.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the clip end of a leash to the ring of a two-dog coupler. Open the leash clip, place around the ring and release the clip to fasten.

    • 2

Call the two dogs to you. They should be wearing collars with a leash ring on them. Open the clip end of one 12-inch lead on the coupler and clip it onto the leash ring on one collar. Make sure that when the clip is released that it fastens securely.

    • 3

Hold the second 12-inch coupler lead so that it is at a 45-degree angle from the one on the first dog. Make sure that the two leads are not crossing but are free and separate from each other. Open the clip on the second 12-inch coupler lead and fasten it to the second dog's collar. Make sure it is a secure connection.

Tips & Warnings

  • Two-dog couplers are available for small dogs in single-ply nylon in narrow widths. The medium and large dog couplers are generally two-ply nylon and are 3/4 inch to 1-1/4 inches wide to withstand a heavier pulling force.

  • If you have a small and a large dog, there are couplers that have a smaller lead and a larger lead attachment so they can both walk at once with the correct pressure for their size.

  • Leather two-dog couplers are available at several merchants in either a flat style or a braided leather style to match your dogs' leashes and collars.

  • Some handlers prefer bungee two-dog couplers so that the 12-inch leads have flex to them when the dogs pull forward. This can train the dogs not to pull, as they will jerk slightly backwards as a corrective measure.

  • Make sure that the two-dog coupler of your choice has a quick-release snap in case your dogs become tangled.

  • As with all dog-training aids, it will take a few walks using a two-dog coupler for the dogs to understand how they work and what you expect from them. If you are patient, this item can save a lot of aggravation and time spent on walking your dogs individually.
