Instructions

    • 1

Cut out a rectangle of fabric that measures 12 inches by 24 inches.

    • 2

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, with the right sides of the fabric facing together.

    • 3

Use the folded edge as the bottom of the bag. Put pins along the side edges to hold the fabric in place. Sew down both sides of the bag, making sure to backstitch at the bottom.

    • 4

Fold the top edge of the fabric inside the bag 1/2 inch and then again another 1/2 inch to hide the raw edges and form a casing. Leave a 1/2-inch opening in the casing at one of the side seams to insert the drawstring. Backstitch at either end of the opening to secure it in place and hold up to a lot of pulling on the drawstring. Turn the bag right side out.

    • 5

Cut two lengths of ribbon that measure 30 inches long. Insert one safety pin into one end of one piece of ribbon and attach it to the bag near the opening in the casing. Insert another safety pin into the other end of the ribbon.

    • 6

Insert the safety pin on the free end of the ribbon into the hole of the casing. Thread the ribbon all the way through the casing, using the safety pin to help you. Pin the two ends together.

    • 7

Pull out just a couple of stitches from the side seam on the opposite side of the bag using a seam ripper. Take the other piece of ribbon and thread it through the same way you did for the other ribbon.

    • 8

Pull out the end of the drawstring and remove all of the pins. Sew the ends of each pair of drawstrings together to keep them from accidentally sliding back into the casing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make your child's bag any size you want--just adjust your fabric accordingly.

  • Use heavier fabric when making drawstring bags for kids. These bags will get a lot of use and lightweight fabric will not hold up.
