How to Making a Throw Pillow Cover With a Zipper
If you have throw pillows in your house, you can easily customize them to create a new statement without spending your money on new pillows. Take a trip to the fabric or craft store and purchase approximately 1/2 yard of fabric and a zipper with some coordinating thread. Now you can sew a throw pillow cover with a zipper so you can take it on and off whenever you choose. Make several in different patterns and change your decor theme as often as you like. You will need basic machine sewing skills for this project.

Prepare your fabric. Machine wash and dry your fabric before using to pre-shrink it, then iron it so it will be smooth for sewing. Cut two pieces of fabric that are 1 inch wider and 1 inch longer than your throw pillow; for instance, if your pillow is 12 inches by 12 inches, you need fabric that is 13 inches by 13 inches.

Sew the zipper onto the fabric. Place the two fabric pieces together with right sides facing, making sure the print of the fabric is facing the same direction. Pin them together on the sides to hold them in place, and pin a zipper to the bottom edge. Your zipper should be approximately four inches shorter than the length of your throw pillow. Baste a seam that is 1/2 inch down from this edge of your fabric. Iron that 1/2-inch seam allowance and sew the zipper on it, with the zipper pull and teeth pressed against the crease of the seam. Turn the fabric right-side-up and use a seam ripper to remove the based seam; now your zipper will stay in place.

Fold the fabric back with the right sides facing. Sew a seam 1/2 inch in from the edges on the other three sides of the fabric. Cut the corners off the fabric, outside the sewn seams; this will give you nicely pointed corners when you turn the pillow cover right-side out.

Turn the pillow cover right-side out and iron the seams flat. Stuff the pillow inside the cover, through the hole on the zippered side. Zip the cover closed and display your new throw pillow covers.
