Toggle Keys use high and low tones to alert computer users.

The Toggle Key function is a Microsoft Windows keyboard feature that causes the computer to beep when the Number Lock (or Num Lock), Scroll Lock or Caps Lock key is used. Although Microsoft incorporated this feature to assist individuals with certain visual, auditory and cognitive impairments, it is also useful for fast typers who need to look away from the computer screen while working. Toggle Keys can be conveniently enabled and disabled to accommodate different needs and preferences when a computer is shared by multiple users.

Instructions

  1. Enable Toggle Keys

    • 1

Open the "Start" menu and select "Control Panel" from the list of icons.

    • 2

Click on the "Accessibility Options" icon in the "Control Panel" menu.

    • 3

Select "Accessibility Options" again when the next menu appears. A separate dialog box will pop up.

    • 4

      Click on the "Keyboard" tab.

    • 5

Check the appropriate box to enable the Toggle Keys.

    • 6

Click "OK" to apply the changes.

    Use Toggle Keys

    • 7

Type on the keyboard as you normally would. This may involve typing information into a Microsoft Office program, browsing the Internet and any other tasks that require keyboard functions.

    • 8

Listen for the sound of a beep as you type. If the sound is high-pitched, this indicates that one of the Toggle Keys has been activated, and a lower pitch sound means that it was deactivated.

    • 9

Determine which Toggle Key was used. The Scroll Lock must be turned on by holding the Function key and the Number Lock key. So this key is rarely activated by accident. On most keyboards, a pop-up message appears when the Caps Lock or Number Lock key is pushed.

    • 10

Press the appropriate Toggle Key again if you did not intend to activate or deactivate it.

    • 11

Turn off a toggle key after you finish using it. For example, deactivate the Caps Lock key when you no longer want to type in all capital letters. To turn off a toggle key, press it.
