1
Decide on the type of sports theme on which you want to base the cake. Various themes include baseball, basketball, football, golf, bowling and soccer, among many others.
-
2
Pick a cooking pan or bowl that you will pour the cake batter into once you have mixed your ingredients together. If you want to fashion the cake into the shape of a football field, you will want to use a rectangular, 13 x 9 cake pan. You can also create a cake in the shape of a circle using two circular cake pans if you want to form the shape of a baseball or soccer ball. You can use an oven-proof glass bowl to create a 3-D effect with your cake.

3
Mix the ingredients of your cake and pour the batter into your respective pan. If you have decided to use a glass bowl, you will want to keep the cake in the oven longer than you would with the more traditional pans as the thickness of the batter will take longer to bake.
-
4
Take the cake out of the oven once it is golden brown and completely cooked through, and let it cool. Once it has cooled sufficiently, place the cake on a serving tray or cutting board, depending on the type of cake you wish to create.
-
5
Carve the cake in the shape you wish to form. If you want to make the shape of a bowling pin, you can take a rectangular shaped cake and carefully, with a carving knife, cut along the edges of the cake. You will want to keep the edges smooth for later steps. If you decided to make a 3-D cake with the glass bowl, carefully remove the cake from the bowl to a serving tray so that the rounded side appears to pop out from the tray.
-
6
Frost the cake with a base coat of icing, using food coloring to achieve the sports theme you desire. For instance, if you want a cake that looks like a bowling ball, you will want the majority of it to be black, so use black food coloring, or mix the colors you have to create a black color.
-
7
Decorate the cake using decorating bags and colored frosting. If you have fashioned the cake into the shape of a baseball, you can add onto the cake the red stitches and maybe an autograph of a famous player. If you're making the cake for a birthday party, don't forget to write "Happy Birthday" and add the candles.
