How to Make a Sari Wrap Dress

A sari wrap dress is the traditional clothing for women in India. The sari wrap dress has a simple construction, yet offers many options for style, design and formality. How the sari is wrapped around the body and draped over the shoulders determines these factors. The quality of the fabric and the design or patterns on the fabric also determine style and formality. Keep these things in mind when you choose the fabric for your sari wrap dress.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to your local fabric store to find your fabric. Silk, chiffon, satin and satin blends, and some light weight cottons are best suited for making a sari wrap dress. Make sure the fabric you choose is light and airy and most easily. Stiffer fabrics are not suitable for a sari wrap dress. Note: for small and average size women, buy 6 to 7 yards of fabric; for taller or heavy weight women, buy 8 to 9 yards.

    • 2

Use the full length of fabric you bought. Turn under the raw edges of your fabric ¼ inch and press. Be sure to test the iron on a small corner first to determine the right temperature for the iron. Generally speaking, the iron should be set on cool except for cottons.

    • 3

Turn under ¼ again and pin in place.

    • 4

Machine stitch close to the edge.

    • 5

Trim all the loose threads and press the edges again.

    • 6

Try wrapping your new sari wrap dress in different ways to find out what style is best suited for your body type.
