When using your computer's Internet browser or file browser, two buttons at the top of the browser window help make navigation easier. The "Back" and the "Next" buttons of your computer's file or Internet browser help you retrace your navigation history, taking you backwards and forwards through the websites or folders you have visited. As you visit locations in your browser, they will be added to a browsing history queue that you can navigate by pressing the "Back" and "Next" buttons.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your computer's Internet browser or file system browser. Both the "Back" button and the "Next" button will be inactive. You cannot click on either button because you have not visited any websites or folders and your browsing history queue contains only the location you are viewing.

    • 2

Navigate to a website or a different folder. The location you left will be added to the history queue and the "Back" button will activate. Pushing the "Back" button will take you back to the location you came from. The "Next" button will remain inactive because you are at the end of your browsing history queue.

    • 3

Push the "Back" button to step backwards in your browsing history, moving you towards the beginning of the queue. The "Next" button will activate. Pushing the "Next" button will take you forwards in your navigation history towards the end of your queue.

    • 4

Navigate to a new website or a different folder. The "Back" button will remain active, allowing you to go backwards in your navigation history queue, but the "Next" button will deactivate. When you visit a new website or file location, the new location is set as the end of your browsing history queue. If you are in the middle of your queue and you visit a new page, all the pages you could access with the "Next" button are automatically overwritten.
