How to Spatter Gel Coat

How to Spatter Gel Coatthumbnail
Apply gelcoat with a spray gun to get a splatter effect.

Gelcoat is a thick fiberglass paint that is generally applied with a spray gun. Since it doesn't air cure like regular paint, it needs a catalyst to harden. Gelcoat can be made in just about any color and used to cover interior or exterior walls. One of the most popular ways to apply gelcoat is to use a splatter technique, giving your walls a bit of texture.

      • 1

Prepare your walls by washing the surface with a damp sponge and drying with a clean cloth. Make sure there is no grease or oil left behind to hinder the application of the gelcoat. Use painter's tape to tape over any areas that you do not wish to paint.

Put on a breathing mask, which will prevent you from breathing in any fiberglass during the spraying process. Mix the gelcoat solution according to the instructions on the label. Pour the gelcoat and the hardening solution into your spray gun. The spray gun will mix the hardener as you are spraying.

Set the air pressure of your spray gun to between 5 and 10 psi. This setting will result in a nice, splattered effect. Evenly sweep your spray gun from left to right.

Let the area dry after applying the first coat. When the first coat is relatively dry and tacky, apply the second coat using the same technique. Allow the gelcoat to completely harden.
