Customizing your number plate (or license plate) can be as simple as filling out an online form and using a credit card to pay. Number plates can be created using various alpha-numeric sequences and many people choose to have a custom number plate to reflect a personalized slogan or name. The alpha-numeric plates on the front or back end of a car are called number plates (or registration plates) in the United Kingdom and Europe and license plates in the USA and Canada.

1. Locate your country's driving authority's website or a nearby branch.

2. Decide what you would like your number plate to read or say. You can choose a combination of letters and numbers for your customized number plate.

3. In the United States, you can customize your license plate (also called a vanity plate) through your state's department of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Applications for vanity plates can be found online through each state's DMV website. The website has a search function that allows you to check if your desired license plate is readily available. A fee is applied for purchasing a vanity plate and two copies of the application must be send to the DMV with proper payment.

4. In the United Kingdom, number plates can be customized through the Driving Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) website. You can choose 10 alpha-numeric characters and a quick search on its website will let you know whether your chosen series is available. Available number plates are auctioned through the website.
