Every state has its own requirements for becoming a registered nurse (RN). The three primary paths to becoming an RN: complete an approved nursing program at a trade school, get an associates degree or get a bachelor's degree. Nursing is a good career path with many opportunities and it is expected that this will continue to be the case in coming years. In Illinois, there are several steps and requirements to become an RN.

      Apply for, attend and complete an approved RN program at a college, university or trade school. Make sure the programs you apply for are approved by the State of Illinois.

      Apply for your RN license with the State of Illinois Division of Professional Regulation once you have completed your program. The application will include a list of forms that need to be completed and submitted. You will need to provide proof that you attended, completed and passed an approved nursing program within the State of Illinois.

      Visit an Illinois State Police department to have fingerprints taken and registered, and to complete a criminal background check. Applicants need to get an Original Fingerprint Receipt to prove they have had their fingerprints taken and registered to take the state licensing exam.

      Apply to take the NCLEX exam. You will need to submit an application, Original Fingerprint Receipt and an application fee. You will receive an "Authorization to Test" letter once you have been approved to take the test. This letter will provide you with information on how to schedule a date to take the exam.

      Once you take and pass the exam, you will receive your nursing license to practice as an RN in Illinois. It will take a few months to receive your license in the mail.

Tips & Warnings

  • You have three years to complete the application process to become an RN once you begin. This gives applicants the opportunity to meet requirements and retake the licensing exam if necessary.

  • It takes commitment, work and time to complete the Illinois State RN requirements. It is a profession with a great future but it will take anywhere from 2 ½ to seven years to complete the process depending on if a person decides to get an associate degree or a bachelor's degree before beginning the RN licensing process.
