Get a Netgear Hub to Work With Comcast

When you have a Comcast high-speed Internet connection, your computer is plugged into one of the largest Internet providers available. However, sharing that connection with more than one computer is a challenge without a properly-set-up hub or wireless router. To solve this, you must get your router and your modem "talking" nicely with each other. Fortunately, with the right advice, this is a quick process.

Things You'll Need

  • Comcast modem
  • Comcast setup software
  • Ethernet cable
  • Netgear router or hub and included set-up disc and Cat5 cable

Instructions

  1. Connecting to the Internet

    • 1

Plug the power adapter for the modem into a wall socket, and then into the power port on the back of the modem.

Find the cable wall outlet (it should be on a plate with a single threaded wall outlet) and attach a coaxial cable to that, and to the corresponding "Cable In" port on the back of your Comcast modem.

    • 3

Power on the cable modem, and wait for the lights on the front to all come on.

Plug an Ethernet cable from your cable modem into your computer's Ethernet port.

    • 5

Open a browser window. Anywhere you try to navigate to will come back to a Comcast download page. Enter your account information when prompted and download the setup software. You may have been provided with a setup CD, which you can also use instead.

    • 6

Run the setup software. Follow the on-screen prompts to finish connecting your Comcast Internet to your computer. If you have any issues with this process, contact Comcast's help desk (see Resources).

    Connecting the Router

    • 7

Plug the power adapter for the Netgear router into the wall, and into the power port on the back of the router.

    • 8

Unplug the Ethernet cable that runs from your computer to the modem at the modem-end. Plug that end of the cable into your router.

    • 9

Run the setup software for your router. It will be on the included CD, although if you have lost the CD, you can find the software on the Netgear website. See Resources for more information.

    • 10

Begin the setup wizard and follow the on-screen prompts to install and set up your Netgear router using the Comcast Internet connection.

Connect the router to the cable modem, when prompted, using the Cat5 cable that is included with the Netgear router.

    • 12

Open a browser window and type in any web address, to test the Internet through the router.

    • 13

Move the router and modem out of the way, placing them where they will be most helpful. If you are using a wireless connection for your computer, you can disconnect the ethernet cable that joins the router to the computer and let it connect wirelessly.
