How to Get an Electrician License in Ohio

You do not have to possess an electrician license to be an electrician in Ohio. However, you may run a more profitable business if you obtain a license. The process for getting a license is not difficult but time-consuming. You will have to contact Ohio state agencies and take an exam.

      In Ohio, you must work as an electrician for five years and have three years of business experience before you can apply to obtain a license.

      Contact to the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (O.C.I.L.B.), Department of Commerce, Division of Industrial Compliance and Labor to apply for your electrician license. You will have to take an exam to be eligible for a license, and you must meet certain qualifications. You must be 18 and a United States citizen or legal resident alien. You cannot have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor involving immorality. You must carry $500,000 of liability insurance and pay necessary fees.

      Send in your application for your license to the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (O.C.I.L.B.). Provide your personal information to take the licensing exam. You must provide proof of prior employment and information regarding credentials.
