Web engineers create, install, and maintain web-based applications and systems. Unlike software engineers who create applications to run on a specific computer operating system, web engineers create applications that can be accessed by all operating systems because they are run on the web. The web engineering discipline involves both software development and programming. If you are interested in a career as a web engineer, you must have an affinity for computers and possess very strong analytical skills.

1. Study computer programming languages and advanced math. There is a lot of math and analysis involved in web programming. Buy as many books related to the field as possible and study them. This will give you a great foundation for when you attend college and eventually enter the workforce.

2. Obtain a bachelor's degree in computer science or engineering. Although not completely necessary because there are web engineers who are employed that are self-taught, a degree will improve your chances of being hired. A course of study for this field is also beneficial because it streamlines the learning process and proves to future employers that you have the necessary knowledge to complete assignments.

3. Intern at your college's IT department to gain valuable experience. Most campuses allow interns to work on their systems in a limited capacity.

4. Find an IT company that allows interns to gain real world experience on the inner workings of a company. This is beneficial for your personal growth and as an addition to your resume.

5. Become an expert on all computer operating systems. You will be working on many different operating systems throughout your career so becoming fluent on each will add to your capabilities, which will improve your chances with prospective employers.

6. Learn how to explain the specifics of your job in layman's terms. You will have to interact with many non-techie personnel in your career. Learn to explain technical jargon in simple terms as this will improve communication problems you will encounter in the future.

7. Create a technology resume. Your resume should have your work history, degrees, certificates and accomplishments that are related to the IT industry plainly explained.

8. Relocate to a technology zone. If you live in an area with few IT jobs, you should move to a more tech-savvy location: New York, California and Chicago all have numerous tech companies and are great markets for web engineers.

9. Continue your education to stay competitive in the marketplace. The IT industry is very competitive and to stay relevant you must constantly continue your education. Buy books about new technologies, take free online courses such as those available at MIT (www.mit.edu), and attend seminars and conferences.
