1
Vacuum the entire surface of the object with the hose or brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner. Vacuuming removes as many of the dust mites as possible before steaming.
-
2
Purchase or rent a steam cleaner. They are available at home improvement stores and some carpet cleaning companies. Make sure that the unit is either a handheld steamer, or that it has a hose attachment if it is a floor steamer.
-
-
3
Fill the steamer with the amount of water recommended by the product manufacturer.
-
4
Wrap a washcloth or hand towel around the base of the hose or brush. Secure the towel to the steamer by wrapping rubber bands around the hose or brush. The towel traps some of the steam, allowing it to retain a higher temperature longer.
-
5
Insert the power cord for the steamer into an electrical outlet and turn the steamer on. Allow the steamer to heat up for the length of time the manufacturer recommends.
-
6
Place the hose or brush of the steamer directly on top of the fabric object. Move the steam across the surface of the object at a rate of about 1/2 inch per second. Continue steaming the object until the entire surface has been steamed.
-
7
Allow the surface to dry for 10 to 15 minutes, and then vacuum again to remove the dead dust mites.
