How to Clean a Front-Load Washer of Mold

Front-load washing machines are notorious for developing mold and mildew over time. Because of their tight sealing drum and the gasket that surrounds the door of the machine, mold tends to accumulate in these washers. Clean a front-load washer of mold with household white vinegar and then use the vinegar preventatively once per month to ensure mold does not build up. Your clothes will smell clean and fresh again.

Things You'll Need

• White vinegar
• Old cleaning cloths

Instructions

Inside of Washing Machine

1. Set the washing machine to a hot wash cycle.

2. Open the detergent tray and pour as much white vinegar into the soap receptacle as possible. You should be able to pour approximately 1 qt. of white vinegar (and perhaps more). Stop pouring the vinegar when the receptacle is full and the vinegar stops draining out the bottom of the receptacle.

3. Close the detergent tray and allow the washing machine to progress through the wash cycle.

4. Set the washing machine to another hot wash cycle and allow the machine to progress through this cycle. The machine will be ready to use when this cycle finishes.

5. Repeat this procedure once per month to prevent mold and mildew from building up.

Gasket of Washing Machine

1. Saturate an old cloth with white vinegar. Alternatively, you might use petroleum jelly on the cloth to remove the mold.

2. Pull the gasket out gently with your hands to reveal the mold and mildew buildup inside the folds of the gasket.

3. Wipe the mold away from the gasket with the cloth. Continue working to wipe away all mold from the folds of the rubber gasket.

4. Dry the folds of the gasket with a dry cloth when you finish removing the mold.

5. Repeat this procedure at least once per month to prevent mold and mildew from forming. If you notice mold occurring more frequently, clean it off when you see it.

Tips & Warnings

• The white vinegar running through the pipes and tubes and around in the washing machine drum will effectively remove mold and mildew from inside the machine.

• Prevent mold from accumulating by always leaving your washing machine door open at least a crack to allow air ventilation inside the washer.
