How to Get an FHA Pre-Foreclosure Counselor
The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offers several programs for defaulting homeowners with FHA-backed mortgages. From short sales to loan modification or refinance, the Federal government is stepping up to help struggling homeowners. If you are facing foreclosure, HUD offers foreclosure prevention counseling services at no cost. It is easy to find a counselor in your area.

Get on the Internet and point your browser to HUD.gov. Make sure that you type in .gov and not .com.

Click on "Program Offices" in the top navigation bar.

Click on "Housing" in the drop-down menu.

Scroll down and, under the heading "I want to," click on "Avoid Foreclosure."

Click on "Talk to a Foreclosure Avoidance Counselor."

Scroll down until you see the map of the United States and click on your state.

Narrow your search, if desired, by entering the name of your city or your zip code. This option sometimes narrows down the search too much and you will get no results. In that case, request information for the entire state. A list will be populated that includes the name of the agency, the phone and fax numbers and the agency's physical, email and website addresses.
