How to Prepare for the Texas Real Estate Broker Exam
Brokering the sale of real estate involves both general real estate law and important legal rights of the buyer and seller. Texas requires a real estate broker's license to ensure that brokers have the necessary knowledge to perform this complicated task. Aspiring brokers must pass a Texas real estate broker's exam as part of the licensing process. Test takers should first learn the actual content and resources for the exam. They can then adequately prepare to pass the exam and obtain a Texas real estate broker's license.

Purchase the resource books recommended by PSI Services LLC (PSI) on psiexams.com. The Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) uses PSI to administer real-estate exams. Applicants for a Texas real estate broker's license must take both the National Real Estate Broker Examination and the Texas Real Estate Broker Examination. Use the PSI "State of Texas Real Estate Salesperson and Broker Candidate Information Brochure" to determine the reference materials for the national and Texas real estate broker exams. PSI lists the references for both exams. You can purchase the books using the publisher links in the brochure.

Study the real estate reference materials to determine and learn what may appear on the test. Although PSI does not specifically endorse these materials, it states that all answers on the Texas real estate broker exams must come from these materials. You will encounter a large amount of information if you buy all these books. Use the exam outlines in the brochure to focus your studies on the specific topics tested on the exams.

Gain additional real estate knowledge through approved courses. An applicant for a Texas real estate broker's license must complete at least 270 hours of approved real estate courses and additional related education. Broker applicants who have already completed the courses should at least study the latest volumes of textbooks used for these courses. Acquire more knowledge of the real estate industry with the required work experience. TREC requires at least two years of work experience as a licensed real estate salesperson or broker. A salesperson can work as a real estate agent under the supervision of a licensed broker. Use your work time to learn as much as you can about the duties and required knowledge of a real estate broker.

Assess your knowledge with real estate practice questions. The PSI "Candidate Information Brochure" has practice questions for the national and Texas real estate exams. Try to pinpoint any weak areas with these questions to help you streamline your additional studies of the various reference books and textbooks. You can also do over 1000 additional practice questions with Barron's "How to Prepare for the Real Estate Licensing Exams: Salesperson, Broker, Appraiser." (See "Resources.") As of 2010, the price is about $17. The answers in the guide have explanations that you can use for additional study and review.

Tips & Warnings
You must pass both the national and state exam. PSI scores them on a separate basis. Do not neglect one portion of the exams even if you have extensive knowledge of national or Texas real estate.
You must submit fingerprints and pass a background check to get a license as a Texas real estate broker.
