Modifying your GH3 controller can make it play like a real guitar.

Activision's Guitar Hero 3 takes its place in the game series by providing living room rockers with a chance to rock out to popular hard and heavy rock songs and taste some stardom. The musically interactive game features a guitar-shaped controller, and just like a real guitar, some modifications exist to help players get the most out of their instruments.

Things You'll Need

  • Flathead screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove all the screws on the controller's back. Set both the screws and the plate aside to concentrate on the brown-colored, rectangular circuit board.

    • 2

Unscrew the circuit board and use the flathead to pry the board from its place in the guitar, taking care not to damage the plastic pins on either side of the board.

    • 3

Tear two pieces of duct tape the same length as the controller's neck and stick them together, the adhesive sides facing one another.

    • 4

Lay the duct tape strip in the guitar in the space where the circuit board rests.

    • 5

Pinch a small bit of adhesive putty into a ball about the size of a pencil eraser. Make one ball for each colored controller button. Roll each ball into a long, thin strip, then place each one on the underside of each colored button.

    • 6

Turn the plastic neck piece of the controller upside down and re-insert the buttons upside down into the controller (the putty strips will be facing you) in their respective order. Insert the circuit board back into its space over the duct tape.

    • 7

Line up both sides of the controller pieces and bring them together, making sure the buttons don't shift while snapping the halves together. Re-screw the controller front and back and press each button down to squash the putty. The buttons will be slightly stiffer and have a better response when playing a game.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add model paint or stickers to the body of the controller to continue to customize the guitar to your preference.
