How to Load a Singer Bobbin

How to Load a Singer Bobbin thumbnail
Bobbins

The bobbin, which is a cylindrical piece that feeds the bottom thread into a sewing machine, must be properly loaded into the machine before a project can be sewn. Singer sewing machines come with two different styles of bobbin case, one that can be accessed from the front of the machine and one from the top of the slide plate. Each style requires a slightly different method of bobbin insertion, although the end result is the same. Anyone can insert a bobbin into a Singer sewing machine to begin making new garments and upholstery.

Instructions

  1. Front-Loading Singer Bobbin Case

    • 1

Raise the presser foot and needle. Pull open the bobbin case cover at the front of the machine, just below the face plate. If necessary, consult your machine manual to find the case cover.

    • 2

Take out the bobbin case. Turn the bobbin so that the thread winds in a clockwise direction. Place the bobbin into the bobbin case.

    • 3

Locate the slit on the left side of the bobbin case. Pull the thread, counterclockwise, through that slit.

    • 4

Pull the thread under the tab, or finger, on the left side of the bobbin case, so that the thread comes out on that side.

    • 5

Turn the bobbin case around and hold it by the latch. Insert the bobbin case into the shuttle, which is shaped just like the bobbin case. Close the bobbin case cover.

Raise the presser foot and needle. Pull the slide plate back so that you can see the bobbin case. If necessary, consult your machine manual to find the slide plate and bobbin case.

    • 7

Unwind the bobbin slightly to get a few inches of extra thread. Turn the bobbin so that the thread winds counterclockwise.

    • 8

Insert the bobbin into the bobbin case. Pull the thread clockwise into the first notch on the edge of the bobbin case.

    • 9

Pull the thread through the guide, into the second notch on the edge of the bobbin case.

    • 10

Draw the thread diagonally across the bobbin, to the right. Close the slide plate, trapping the thread between the slide plate and needle plate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you have finished loading the bobbin, you must draw the thread up through the needle plate, using the threaded needle and the hand wheel.
