Mirrors can open up small spaces.

Size shouldn't be a hindrance when you're decorating. Smaller rooms can be challenging but the good news is you need less stuff to fill them. Working with the space you have and keeping things balanced is a key to decorating any room. With the right knowledge, you can decorate a small living room and make it look like you spent hundreds of dollars on a professional designer. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a color that you like and that accents pieces in your room. Darker colors make rooms feel smaller but white doesn't necessarily make a room feel larger. If you don't want to paint the entire room, select one wall to paint and use that color on other accents throughout the room.

    • 2

Select a focal feature for your living room. Don't avoid large pieces, just use them sparingly. A single, larger piece of artwork, for example, will serve your small space better than several small pieces.

    • 3

Decorate vertically. Tall storage furniture won't overwhelm a small room. An armoire opposite another large piece of furniture will create balance in the room.

    • 4

Keep everything to scale. Oversized sofas and chairs and bulky armoires dwarf rooms. Select narrow sofas, or condo-sized sofas and chairs, so you'll have more room for other pieces of furniture. Two narrow sofas facing each other separated by a small coffee table or ottoman provides plenty of seating without seeming over-crowded.

    • 5

Hide what you can. Numerous pieces can make a small space look cluttered. Find a media cabinet that hides your television, stereo and assorted discs. Select coffee tables and end tables that can be used for storage.

    • 6

Use a room divider to hide unattractive items such as air conditioners or exercise equipment.

    • 7

Use acrylic tables. Clear nesting tables will fade into their environment. Stack them when you're not using them.

    • 8

Use mirrors to open space, reflect light and make a room feel bigger. A mirror reflecting an opposite window creates a feeling of openness.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your room neat. Unfortunately, small rooms looked cluttered when they're not. Keep accents to a minimum, displaying only your favorite pieces.
