How to Measure for Cowboy Boots

How to Measure for Cowboy Boots thumbnail
Cowboy boot sizing is easy but should be done right.

Cowboy boots are made for utility as well as fashion. They are meant to fit snugly and securely, holding your feet and ankles in place as you walk around. Because of these factors and because many cowboy boots are still made by hand, it is important to measure correctly to determine your size. Sizes of boots may vary between manufacturers, but your actual measurements do not change. Simply apply your measurements to the boot manufacturer's sizing charts for a perfect fit every time. Instructions

    • 1

Put on the socks you intend to wear with your cowboy boots. Because the boots are very form-fitting, this is an essential step in making sure the size is correct.

    • 2

Set one foot down on one sheet of paper, as close to the center as possible. Make sure your entire foot is on the paper.

    • 3

Have a friend trace the outline of your foot on the paper. Repeat with a second piece of paper for your other foot. It is not unusual for one foot to be slightly larger than the other.

    • 4

Use the ruler to measure the length and width of each foot. Write the corresponding measurements down on each sheet of paper.

    • 5

Use the larger of the two sets of measurements to determine your boot size according to your desired cowboy boot manufacturer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Measure your feet toward the end of the day. It is not unusual for feet to swell slightly over the course of a day, so Tim's Boots advises measuring later in the day to ensure that your boots are comfortable all the time.

  • Be prepared to tug your boots on and off your feet. They should not go on easily, like slippers. Once the boots are on, make sure that the ball of your foot sits on the widest part of the sole. This will ensure that your foot is getting proper arch support, which will give you the greatest comfort while wearing your boots.

  • Make sure your toes are not rubbing against the inside of the tip of the boot. It is OK and even expected if they touch but they should not rub. Your toes should also not slide forward as you walk in your boots. If they do slide, you need a longer, narrower size. Your feet should be held comfortably in place inside your cowboy boots, with no forward movement of your feet inside the boots as you walk.

  • Do not think you can cheat to determine the boot size by using your tennis shoe or other shoe size. Jenifer June of the Cowboy Boot Bulletin Board advises that many cowboy boot wearers find that their sizes are slightly different to their sizes in other types of shoes because cowboy boots are made to fit differently.
