Between dripping meat, juicy marinades and barbecue sauces, it doesn't take long for the inside of a barbecue grill to become a sticky, tacky mess. But while it seems that a barbecue grill becomes messy effortlessly, getting it clean again is another matter. Fortunately cleaning a barbecue grill can be accomplished with a minimum of fuss and a lack of degreaser. All you need are a few cleaning tools and some elbow grease. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Grill cleaner
  • Cleaning cloth
  • Stainless steel cleaner
  • Glass cleaner
  • Wire brush
  • Nylon dish scraper
  • Grease-fighting dish detergent
  • White vinegar
  • 2-gallon bucket
  • Spray bottle

Instructions

  1. Exterior Cleaning

    • 1

      Spray the exterior of the grill with a commercially manufactured grill cleaner.

      Wipe the exterior down with a cleaning cloth.

    • 3

      Rinse with warm water to wash away residual dirt and grill cleaner.

      Spray stainless steel components with a stainless steel cleaner. Allow to sit for 2 minutes before wiping clean.

      Spray glass surfaces with glass cleaner, and wipe clean to remove fingerprints.

    Interior Cleaning

      Turn gas burner on low.

    • 7

      Scrub grill grates until clean. Turn burner off and allow to cool.

      Remove grilling grates.

      Scrub the casting sides of the grates with a wire brush to remove dirt and debris.

      Remove sear plates.

      Scrape sear plates with a nylon dish scraper to remove debris. Brush with a wire brush to remove ash.

      Scrape loose debris into the drip pan.

      Scrape drip tray out with the nylon dish scraper.

    Cleaning Gas Grill Burner

    • 14

      Mix 1 tbsp. dish detergent, 1 cup vinegar and 1 gallon water in a 2-gallon bucket.

      Disconnect the gas supply, and open all valves for 3 minutes to purge them.

      Remove lava rocks and grill grates to reveal the burner. Place lava rocks in the bucket to soak away grease.

      Remove burner cover. Place in bucket to soak.

    • 18

      Fill a spray bottle with cleaning solution from bucket.

    • 19

      Spray the burner with cleaning solution. Scrub with a scrub brush to remove grease buildup and debris.

      Wipe down all surfaces. Remove burner cover and lava rocks. Wipe clean and allow to dry.

    • 21

      Reassemble the grill.
