How to Cut in Diamond Shapes

How to Cut in Diamond Shapes thumbnail
There are a variety of diamond shapes and sizes.

Cutting any shape into fabric can be easy if you have fabric punches or die cutter. If you don't have a fabric punch or a die cutter you will have to follow some easy steps to cut a diamond into your fabric while still keeping the fabric intact. If you are working with fabric that frays you will need to hem the edges of your diamond cut.

Instructions

  1. Regular Diamond Cut

    • 1

Draw a diamond on your fabric with the fabric marker and a ruler.

    • 2

Fold the fabric along a line from one of the diamond points to the opposite point. Iron the fabric along this straight line.

    • 3

Cut out the diamond shape with the fabric scissors. With the fabric still folded, cut long the lines that you made in step one. If you drew the diamond proportionally, the lines on one side of the fold should match with the lines on the other side of the fold.

    • 4

Open the fabric and iron the crease flat.

    Hemmed Diamond Cut

    • 5

Follow steps one to four above.

    • 6

Draw a ¼-inch solid line out from each point with the fabric marker. Connect the ends of the points with a dotted line. This will create a diamond that is a ¼ inch bigger than the original diamond.

    • 7

Snip the four ¼-inch solid lines. Fold along the dotted lines so that the four flaps are on the underside of the fabric. Iron alone the folded lines.

    • 8

Sew a straight stitch 1/8-inch from the edge of the fold to secure the flap and prevent the fabric from fraying.

Tips & Warnings

  • Reserve the unused pieces that were cut out of the fabric for other crafts.

  • If you are hemming your diamond shape, draw an initial diamond that is ¼ inch smaller at each end.
