How to Change the Height and Width of a Music Video

Changing the dimensions of a music video (or any video) requires a movie conversion program, since altering the height and width of a picture's size includes re-compressing its data, using the same process you would if you were converting your video from one format to another. Unfortunately, these programs do not come standard with your PC or Mac computer, so they must be downloaded from the Internet. With one of the following programs, you may re-size a music video you downloaded online to fit onto a portable media device, like a cell phone or MP3 player. In this case, consult your manual for the pixel resolution your device supports. Please note that re-sizing or compressing existing video footage may result in loss of quality, due to compression standards.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install a video conversion program (see Resources). Agree to its terms of use. Open your video upon launching the software by clicking "File" and "Open File..." and locating your video using the pop-up window. If using HandBrake, click the "Source" icon to direct your computer to the correct video.

    • 2

Choose your video's export format by selecting an export option under the "File" menu. You will need to pick a format even if you don't want to convert your video. If you want to retain the same format, simply choose the same format in your export options. In HandBrake, click the "Toggle Presets" button to select a more specific option, if needed (iPod, Apple TV, etc.).

    • 3

Select your video's output picture size in the export menu. If using QuickTime Player, click the "Options..." button to choose your video's dimensions. You may enter your own frame size, if needed, but it may be best to choose from the program's main settings.

    • 4

Rename your file and choose its output destination (where your computer will save the file to). Click "Save" or "Start" to begin the conversion.

Tips & Warnings

  • Please allow several minutes for your video to convert. The amount of time it takes will depend on the size and dimensions of your music video.
