The United Way of America has identified finding affordable housing as being one of the most serious problems families face today. Some families pay more than half their monthly income on rent - sometimes in severely substandard homes. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has determined that no more than 30 percent of income should go toward housing costs.

on 11/22/2005 Get involved with Habitat for Humanity! You can be a volunteer to help build or fix up homes; you can donate materials or money; you can put in "sweat equity" and perhaps qualify for a home this way.

on 11/22/2005 Even the middle-class pays more than 30 percent of its income on housing in many areas. Try 50 percent plus! Add to that the cost of providing subsidized housing for others - it isn't "free" - and the percentage goes up even more!
