A bodyboard strap, or leash, prevents you from losing your board in rough surf. One end of the strap is anchored to the board, while the other can be tied around your ankle or wrist. Many bodyboards (also called boogie boards) come with a strap already installed, but higher-end models forgo a pre-installed strap to allow the owner to choose the type and location of his strap. The installation process only takes a few seconds and can even be done right in the store when purchasing a board.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the location to install the strap. Generally, this will be toward the front and center of the board. You may choose a different location depending on how you will attach the strap to your body, such as toward to tail of the board if you plan to attach the strap to your ankle, or near one of the right or left edges. Do not place the strap too close to an edge of the board. Mark the location on the slick side of the board.

    • 2

Take a Phillips-head screwdriver or similar hole-punching tool and push it through the slick side of the board at the marked location. Push it all the way through, keeping the hole perpendicular with the surface of the board.

    • 3

Insert the end of the anchor with the strap attached into the hole from the top of the board.

    • 4

Insert the threaded end of the anchor through the underside of the board and use a coin to screw it firmly in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Heating the screwdriver or puncturing tool before pushing it through the board surface will cauterize the inside of the hole and prevent the area from becoming water-logged.
