Instructions

    • 1

Insert the Windows recovery disk into the CD-ROM drive of your HP laptop.

    • 2

Restart your computer. Click the "Start" menu followed by "Restart." As the computer boots, you are presented with prompt that says "Press any key to boot from CD." Press any key on your keyboard.

    • 3

Allow the computer to load from the CD. This is an important step because you cannot reformat a drive that is in use. Therefore, booting from the CD allows you to make changes to hard drive because it's not currently in use.

    • 4

Select a language when prompted and click the "Next" button.

    • 5

Click the "Install Now" button that appears in the middle of the screen. This opens a window with the licensing agreement.

    • 6

Accept the licensing agreement and click "Next." After you click "Next," a window with two installation options appears.

    • 7

Choose "Custom" installation. This option allows you to reformat your hard drive before reinstalling the operating system. After you choose "Custom" installation, a list of drives and partitions appears in the next window.

    • 8

Delete all partitions that remain on your hard drive. If you do not have any partitions, you can skip this step. To delete a hard drive partition, click on the partition in the window that displays all of the drives and partitions, and then click the "Delete" button below the window.

    • 9

Click the hard drive after you have removed all partitions. This is likely labeled the "C" drive. After you have selected the hard drive, click the "Format" button. The hard drive is now completely erased and reformatted.

    • 10

Click the "Next" button after you have reformatted the drive and you are prompted to reinstall Windows. Follow the prompts to reinstall Windows.
