1
Gather your cardboard rolls. You can use paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls and even wrapping paper rolls for your homemade planting pots.
-
2
Cut the rolls down to size. Toilet paper rolls are the perfect size. If you have paper towel rolls or wrapping paper rolls, cut them to the same size as the toilet paper rolls with a sharp pair of scissors.

3
Take one of the cut cardboard rolls and lay it out in front of you on your work surface. Squash it down gently with your hand until it is flat. Open it up, lay it down in front of you again, and squish it flat opposite the crease that you just made.
-
4
Open the cardboard roll. After the two flattenings, it should now assume the shape of a square instead of a circle.
-
5
Choose one side of the cardboard roll and cut a ½-inch slit in each of the four corners, forming four flaps. Fold each of the flaps down toward the center of the opening to create creases.
-
6
Fold each of the four flaps down to form the bottom of your planting pot. The flaps fold over one another, just like the bottom of a cardboard box. Fold each of the flaps down, turning the planting pot counterclockwise as you go along. Slide the final flap under the first flap to secure it.
-
7
Turn the homemade planting pot right-side up and fill it with the planting medium of your choice.

Tips & Warnings
Each time you exhaust a roll of toilet paper, paper towels or wrapping paper, store the empty rolls in a dry area so you will have the rolls when you need them.
Setting the planting pots on a baking tray will keep them standing tall and upright when you fill them with the planting medium.
When you're ready to plant the pots outside, open up the bottoms of the pots so the roots have better access to the soil.
Be careful when you are folding down the tabs. If you accidentally rip any of the tabs off, you will not have a bottom to your homemade planting pot.
