How to Share a DVR on Another TV

Watch your DVR shows on more than one television.

Digital Video Recorders allow you to record all of your favorite shows and movies, usually with just the click of a button. But one of the downsides to these devices is that generally they are only hooked up to one television. That means that if you have a show saved on your living room DVR, you can't watch it in the bedroom. However most DVRs have extra sets of hookups that would allow you to watch them on multiple televisions.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine which set of hookups your DVR is currently using. There are generally two or three sets of hookups; HDMI (long, flat port), a coaxial port (round, metal and cylindrical), RCA (yellow/white and red round ports) and component video (green/blue/red plus white/red for audio). The ports you are using will have wires coming out of them and going to your television.

    • 2

Determine which set of hookups you will use for the second television. Compare your open hookups to the second television; the ports will be exactly the same there, except they will be labeled input instead of output.

    • 3

Purchase the necessary wires. Any of these connections (HDMI, coaxial, RCA or component video) can be found at any electronics store or website.

    • 4

Connect the wires into the hookups on the back of the DVR. For HDMI, component video or RCA, simply insert the plug into the hole. For coaxial, ensure the tiny pin in the wire into the hole, then twist the end to secure it in place. Repeat with the corresponding input on your television.

    • 5

Set your television to the video input that you used for your wiring (for coaxial, simply tune the television to channel 3). It should be labeled on the back on the television, for example "Video 5" or "HDMI". This is usually done by pushing a button on your remote, which can be labeled "Source" or "TV/Video". Check your remote's manual for more information on this.
