Instructions

    • 1

Spread an even layer of thin-set in the area where you will be installing your marble tiles, using your notched trowel. Cover 100 percent of the area, as any voids underneath a tile can cause cracks over time. Only spread enough for one or two tiles to start until you are comfortable with your installation speed.

    • 2

Apply a thin layer of thin-set to the back of the marble tile with the flat side of your notched trowel, covering 100 percent of the tile, including the corners and outermost edges.

    • 3

Install the marble tile in its desired location, applying gentle and firm pressure as you move it slightly in all directions to ensure the bond with the thin-set on the floor is complete. Once you are sure the bond is set, move the tile to its final position. Repeat this process with every tile.

    • 4

Place each subsequent piece of marble tile directly next to the previous piece. Marble and granite tiles are made specifically to be installed tight with one another, so place each piece accordingly. Use your rubber mallet to adjust pieces if they require some additional coaxing. Check the flatness of the installation every three or four tiles with your level or straight edge, adding or subtracting thin-set from underneath the tiles as necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • A typical 12-by-12 tile requires a 3/8-inch notched trowel. Larger tiles will require a larger notch, and smaller tiles vice-versa.

  • All materials and tools can be purchased or rented from your local home improvement store.
