How to Print on Newsprint

How to Print on Newsprint thumbnail
Printing on newsprint is ideal for newspaper and newsletters.

Newsprint paper is unlike ordinary printer paper because it is thinner and typically off-white. As its name suggests, it is typically used in newspaper printing. For home use, it is perfect for creating an antique look for newsletters or arts and crafts projects. The paper has the tendency to yellow over time, so it is not recommended for documents that need to be saved.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a professional-grade printer if you have access. This will give you your best and sharpest result. Select soy-based inks. These are the inks used by the Newspaper Association of America because they are more cost-effective than petroleum-based inks and they create a sharp image on the off-white newsprint paper.

    • 2

Use a laser printer if you don't have access to a professional printer. You won't get the results of a professional printer, but it might be a more affordable and practical option. Use a regular home printer just as you would with any standard printer paper or cardstock. Your newsprint paper might stick together, so print each page one at a time if possible or closely monitor your print progress.

    • 3

Wear gloves and an apron if possible. Regardless of how you print on newsprint, you run the risk of having ink smudge onto your fingers. Even after the ink dries, handling the paper for any amount of time may lead to ink transferring to your skin and clothing.

    • 4

Allow each page of ink to fully dry. Printer ink adheres to a sheet of newsprint much differently than with other, thicker papers. Stacking sheets on top of each other or handling while the ink is still wet will lead to smudging and running of the ink.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look for professional printing services in your area. Printers will often charge you less if you print items in bulk and they will take all the guesswork out of your printing if you are running a large order.
