Instructions

    • 1

Remove rotted wood with a flat-head screwdriver. Rotten wood will be soft and can be cleaned away from the good wood. Fill the hole with wood putty. Build the hole with layers if the hole is deep. Apply a wood preservative and let it dry. Sand the area with medium-grit sandpaper and paint with primer and a matching trim paint.

Fill cracked wood with wood putty. Use a putty knife to fill any cracked wood and allow the putty to dry. Finish the job by sanding with medium-grit sandpaper; apply a primer and paint to match the frame.

    • 3

Apply wood caulk to fill gaps between boards that have separated. Caulking the gaps will prevent water from entering and causing damage to unpainted wood. Caulk is sold ready to use in tubes at home improvement centers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wood preservative prevents damage to wood from wind, rain and sun. It also protects the wood from mold and fungus.

  • There are many variations of caulk. Read the label and select a wood caulk for your weather conditions.

  • Severely damaged wood should be replaced by a professional carpenter.
