How to Do Layers in Adobe Illustrator Cs3
Adobe Illustrator CS3 is a design software program that allows users to create professional looking graphics. This software product is a standard tool for most professional graphic designers and aids in the creation of logos and other graphical elements. One feature that makes Adobe Illustrator an effective tool is the ability to create layers. A layer is essentially an invisible sheet placed on top of an original image. You can make changes to a layer without making permanent changes to an original image. This is useful for creating multiple versions of a graphical element.

1
Launch Adobe Illustrator CS3 and open an Illustrator file that you want to add a layer to.
-
2
Locate and open the "Layers" toolbar. This should be located in the main editing toolbar on the right side of Adobe Illustrator. Click the "Layers" icon, which will be at the very bottom of the main editing toolbar. The icon has two diamond shaped layers, one on top of another.

3
Click the "Create New Layer" button located on the bottom of the "Layers" toolbar. This icon has a square with a small square inside of it. This creates a new layer and lists it in the "Layers" toolbar.

4
Double-click the layer you just created in the "Layers" toolbar. This opens the options for the layer. You can rename the layer to something memorable from this menu. For example, if you are editing a certain aspect of the image file in that layer, you can name the layer after that aspect of the image.

5
Make sure the layer you just created is selected and edit the image. All edits appear only in the layer you created. Click the "Eye" icon in the "Layers" toolbar to view the image with the layer and without the layer. You can also lock the layer by clicking the "Lock" icon in the "Layers" toolbar. This protects the layer from further editing and is a good feature when you have completed your work.
