BitTorrents are files with an extension of .torrent that can be opened with BitTorrent client programs such as uTorrent, BitComet and Vuze. When a BitTorrent is run by a client, the user connects to other people across the internet to download pieces of an underlying file associated with the .torrent file, such as a program, video or audio file. BitTorrent download rates can vary greatly depending on a variety of factors and as a result there are several ways to attempt to increase BitTorrent download speed.

Download healthy torrents. The "health" of a torrent is determined by how many other users are running the torrent and sharing parts of the underlying file. When you look for torrents, you should always try to find a version with at least 100 peers and seeds for the best download speed (Peers and seeds are often listed on the download page for torrent files.).

Increase your upload and download speed settings. The upload and download settings you use in your BitTorrent client can have a large impact on your download speed. Each BitTorrent client program will be somewhat different, but each should have a settings or options menu where you can change maximum download speed and upload speed. Increasing upload speed may actually increase download speed, since programs may punish users for not sharing data with others.

Change the number of simultaneous downloads and uploads. In your client's settings menus there should also be options to change the amount of simultaneous downloads and uploads. Reducing these numbers may improve download speed.
